In the wake of the 2001 September eleventh terrorist attacks, the New York Times reported that the New York CIA station, headed by a woman, was located in a building of the World Trade Center complex. When the Trade Towers came down, the adjacent CIA office was destroyed as well. Business people and students going overseas were recruited by this CIA station to gather intelligence information while abroad. This is the story of one such person, the challenges he faced, and the affect of his longstanding relationship with the CIA Station Chief.Dandy Dan McCracken is a rogue wandering around eastern Pennsylvania and living by his wits in the middle years of the American Revolution. Through circumstance, he becomes a spy. Wounded and on the run from a sheriff, he’s rescued and nursed back to health by the lo! vely ward of Benedict Arnold’s procurement officer in Philad! elphia. McCracken is enamored of the girl, but when her husband returns from the American front, he flees and falls in with a band of British spies. He switches sides again when he discovers his conscience as a result of falling in love, and not because he favors one side over the other. His actions now â€" not through choice but again through circumstance â€" make him a hero.Coming right off the explosive success of RUSH HOUR and SHANGHAI NOON, action superstar Jackie Chan now delivers even more big-screen thrills! This time, Jackie Chan rises to the occasion in a fun-filled story about an ordinary guy about to kick into an action-packed adventure! Jackie plays a bored and unsuccessful salesman who never thought his life would amount to anything. All that changes one day when he becomes an instant hero by foiling an attempted bank robbery. But his newfound fame uncovers an even bigger surprise: Jackie is actually the latest in a long line of professional spies! Then, as he tr! avels to Turkey to meet the father he's never known, Jackie becomes entangled in a web of mystery and deceit that only he can unravel! Hilarious and endlessly thrilling, THE ACCIDENTAL SPY delivers everything you expect from big-screen favorite Jackie Chan!Jackie Chan returns to dazzling form! If you've watched Chan's Hollywood movies (Rush Hour, Shanghai Noon) and been unimpressed, The Accidental Spy is a good introduction to the astonishing fights and extraordinary stunts that make Chan's Hong Kong films such events. Chan plays an exercise-equipment salesman who turns out to be the missing son of a Korean double agent who's connected with drug lords in Turkey who have developed a super-addictive opium--got all that? The plot is largely nonsensical, a series of implausible escapades that frame the action; but what the movie lacks in logic, it makes up for in spectacle, ranging from a burning runaway truck cascading off a bridge to a stark-nake! d Chan pursued by thugs in a Turkish bazaar, defending himsel! f with e very implement in sight. This is why Jackie Chan is the biggest movie star in the world--check it out. --Bret Fetzer

Amores Perros

  • Condition: New
  • Format: DVD
  • Anamorphic; Color; Dolby; DVD; Subtitled; Widescreen; NTSC
Academy Award® nominee Javier Bardem is Uxbal, a man on the wrong side of the law who struggles to provide for his children on the dangerous streets of Barcelona. As fate encircles him, Uxbal learns to accept the realities of life, whether bright, bad â€" or biutiful â€" in this unforgettable Academy Award®-nominated film from director Alejandro González Iñárritu (Amores Perros, 21 Grams and Babel).A heartbreakingly direct performance by Javier Bardem anchors Biutiful, a film from Mexican auteur Alejandro González Iñárritu (Babel, 21 Grams). Uxbal (Bardem) is not an admirable man: he's a criminal middleman, helping human traffickers and illicit street peddlers in Barcelona. But in the thick of his corrupt and compromised world, Uxbal strives t! o do some modest good: he demands heaters for the cold basement where illegal Chinese laborers sleep and he carefully scrapes together money for his children, whom he deeply adores. On top of all this, Uxbal can commune with the recently dead, and tries to pass on reassurance to the bereaved. When Uxbal himself is diagnosed with severe cancer, he desperately tries to leave behind something better for his children. This plot summary paints a bleak picture, and there's no question this is--much like Iñárritu's other films, including Amores Perros--an emotionally harrowing experience. But Biutiful is also visually rich and deeply humane, and holds moments of grace that can only be found in sadness and loss. The entire cast brings a fullness of life to all of the characters, no matter how briefly they appear, but Bardem almost never leaves the screen and carries the movie with magnetic force. --Bret FetzerAcademy Award® nominee Javier Bardem is Uxbal, a ! man on the wrong side of the law who struggles to provide for ! his chil dren on the dangerous streets of Barcelona. Flooded with romantic memories of their courtship, Dean and Cindy use one night to try and save their failing marriage. Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams star in this honest portrait of a relationship on the rocks.Love blooms and dies at the same time in th! e delicate dance between Oscar nominees Ryan Gosling (Half ! Nelson) and Michelle Williams (Brokeback Mountain). Gosling's Dean, a high-school dropout, works for a New York moving company. While relocating a frail widower into a retirement home, he spots Cindy, a nursing student who's visiting her grandmother, but the film actually begins six years later. Married with a daughter, they live in rural Pennsylvania. Heavy drinker Dean's looks are fading, while Cindy still turns heads. In his elegantly constructed second feature, writer-director Derek Cianfrance pirouettes between past and present, with each scene commenting on the next (set to the bittersweet tones of Brooklyn band Grizzly Bear). The Dean of the early years pursues Cindy, who resists at first, but a spontaneous date ends with her tap dancing (badly) and him singing (not so badly). She leaves her domineering boyfriend (Mike Vogel) for this attentive stranger, leading to scenes of intimacy that are far more suggestive than pornographic--even if the MPAA briefly rated the! film NC-17. Later, when the family dog goes missing, the cracks in their marriage intensify, so Dean arranges for a night of romance, which plays out like a negative image of their first date. If the two actors, who are very good, are meant to carry equal weight, Gosling has the more difficult task. It's harder to like the clingy, insecure Dean, who loves more intensely and less wisely, but that makes Gosling's the braver performance. --Kathleen C. FennessyThree lives become inextricably linked in the wake of a terrible car crash: a young punk stumbles into the sinister underground world of dog fighting; an injured supermodel's pooch disappears into the apartment's floorboards; and an ex-radical turned hit man rescues a gun-shot Rotweiler. In telling three stories connected by one traumatic incident, Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu uses an intricate screenplay by novelist Guillermo Arriaga to make three movies in close orbit, expressing the notion that we are defined by what we lose--from our loves to our family, our innocence, or even our lives. These interwoven tales--about a young man in love with his brother's pregnant wife, a perfume spokeswoman and her married lover, and a scruffy vagrant who sidelines as a paid killer--are united by a devastating car crash that provides the film's narrative nexus, and by the many dogs that the characters own or care for. There is graphic violence, prompting a disclaimer that controversial dog-fight scenes were harmless and carefully supervised, but what emerges from Amores Perros is a uniquely conceptual portrait of people whom we come to know through their relationship with dogs. The! film is simultaneously bleak, cynical, insightful, and compassionate, with layers of meaning that are sure to reward multiple viewings. --Jeff Shannon

Brooklyn Rules

  • TESTED
A gripping tale of three life-long friends struggling with relationships, responsibility and loyalty on the mean streets of 1980 s-era Brooklyn, NY. When the violent influence of the mafia becomes a factor in their friendship, lives will be threatened as the fond memories of the past begin to give way to a potentially grim future.

Produced and directed by Michael Corrente (Outside Providence, American Buffalo) and written by Emmy Award Winning writer Terence Winter (The Sopranos)If Brooklyn Rules, a tale about a trio of good fellas making their way through the mean streets of that New York borough, just happens to remind you of the work of Martin Scorsese, you're not the only one. But even if it's not the most original film in cinematic history, director Michael Corrente's 2007 effort is entertaining enough to hold one's attention for most of its 99 minute running time! . Michael (Freddie Prinze Jr., who also supplies the voice-over narration), Bobby (Jerry Ferrara, Entourage's Turtle), and Carmine (Scott Caan, son of James) are the kind of punks who stole money from the church collection plate when they were Catholic schoolboys. Cut to the 1980s, when they're in their twenties, still close pals but following divergent paths: Michael, a smart, ambitious Columbia undergrad, plans to become a lawyer, while nerdy skinflint Bobby ("You're so cheap, if you saw a sign that said 'free slaps in the face,' you'd be the first in line," says Mike) hopes to land a gig at the post office, and the narcissistic Carmine is falling in with the wrong crowd, courtesy of Caesar Manganaro (Alec Baldwin), a captain in the Gambino crime family. Needless to say, conflicts ensue, as Michael scores a WASP girlfriend (an underused Mena Suvari), a mob war breaks out (based on real events, including the murder of big boss Paul Castellano and the ascension of Jo! hn Gotti), violence strikes tragically close to home, and the ! f-word i s employed liberally. Corrente does a nice job of evoking an era in which Billy Idol and Culture Club ruled the airwaves and Cabbage Patch Dolls were all the rage; and writer Terence Winter, a veteran of The Sopranos, has an ear for colorful, pithy dialogue ("That cardigan makes you look like the Italian Fred MacMurray"… "Depressed? She wouldn't be happy sitting in the lap of Jesus"). But a largely unsatisfying ending underscores the fact that Brooklyn Rules is nothing to go to the mattresses for. Extras including commentary by Corrente and Winter and a video accompanying the Rolling Stones' "Sympathy for the Devil," which is featured on the soundtrack. --Sam Graham
